Module 2, General Medical Level

This 16 year old black male presented with the chief complaint of left scapular winging and weakness of the left arm. Patient also complained of the inability to abduct arms beyond the horizontal position. Patient had also notice increasing atrophy of the left arm. He was active in sports and played football but was unable to play basketball.


Question 2A

Further work up should include x-rays of the cervical spine.


Question 2B

A full physical examination should include careful assessment of muscle strength in both upper and lower extremity.


Question 2C

Deficits would also be expect in the sensory examination.


Question 2D

A careful family history would be expected to be positive for other family members with similar complaints.


Question 2E

Following a complete physical examination the first test which should be obtained to further work-up this condition is an Electromyogram and Nerve conduction studies.
