Module 4, General Medical Level

A four year old girl presented for evaluation of short stature. She was healthy, the product of a normal pregnancy and delivery. Her height was 80 cm, below the third percentile for her age.


Question 4A

On physical examination care should be paid to the relative proportion of her limbs to her trunk.

A careful evaluation of the facial features and head circumference is also important.

Following the physical examination , the next most important tests to obtain is an xray which should include the whole spine and all long bones.

Many of the short stature bone dysplasias involve the lower extremities more than the upper extremities.

An accurate diagnosis is very important to make at this time.
