Module 42, General Medical Level

A 6 month old Amish infant female was referred for symmetric polydactyly of both hands. Prior to her presentation in our clinic she was seen and evaluated by a cardiologist for an apparent congenital heart murmur. On physical examination of the upper extremities there was a sixth digit on the ulnar border of both hands. The finger nails appeared to be dysplastic.

Congenital heart defects associated with this condition may include hypoplasia of the aorta.

The above condition is only found in the Noth American Amish community.

Post-axial polydactyly in the hands, i.e. an extra finger lateral to the normal little finger, is a consistent finding.


Question 42D

Post-axial polydactyly in the feet (i.e. an extra toe lateral to the normal little toe) is also a very common finding.


Question 42E

Premature eruption of the teeth sometimes soon after birth, occurring at birth, is a common finding in the condition.
