Module 48, General Medical Level

A 12 month old girl presents with severe overgrowth of the foot (image 1). She was the product of a normal pregnancy and delivery and is otherwise completely healthy. The parents main complaint is that she can not be fitted with shoes. She had an amputation of the 2nd and 3rd toes at the level of the mid diaphysis proximal phalanx and extensor tendon release of the 2nd and 3rd toes with excision of abnormal fibrofatty tissue of right foot (image 2).


Question 48A

The cause of this large size is probably a soft tissue maligancy.


Question 48B

With the current surgery which makes both feet about equal size the feet will grow and remain equal.


Question 48C

An ultra sound of the abdomen is indicated to rule out an abdomen tumor.


Question 48D

This child probably has congenital limphedema.


Question 48E

A family history is not expected to produce other cases in the immediate family.
