Module 61, General Medical Level

A six year old girl falls and complains of pain in her right wrist. An x-ray is ordered and the radiologist's reading is a minimally displaced Salter type 2 buckle fracture of the distal radius.


Question 61A

This type of fracture usually does not need a reduction.


Question 61B

This means the fracture involves the growth plate of the radius however it is usually of no significance for future growth.


Question 61C

A short arm cast is the correct treatment.


Question 61D

The cast will need to be worn for 8 weeks until there is adequate healing.


Question 61E

The first 24 to 48 hours substantial pain is expected and the parents should be given Tylenol with codeine to give the child.
