The use of orthotics has not been well studied in SMA. However, studies of Duchenne dystrophy and cerebral palsy have shown that braces make no impact on the rate of progression of the scoliosis and definitely do not stop progression. The brace response in SMA is felt to be similar to these conditions. Also it is very important not to use a body orthosis which restricts respiration which is already impaired in children with SMA.
