The correct answer is:
Scoliosis is a pathologic condition whose cause in many cases is known. An important aspect in evaluating patients presenting with scoliosis is to determine an etiology of the scoliosis. Scoliosis is analogous to abdominal pain in which a careful history, physical examination and work up is required to determine the etiology to plan the proper treatment. Spinal cord tumors, brain tumors, spinal cord and brain malformation, cerebral palsy, muscle disease, and osteogenesis imperfecta are only a few of the well recognized causes of scoliosis. A very common cause is idiopathic scoliosis occurring in adolescent girls. The exact etiology of the curve in this syndrome is not known but it requires ruling out all the known causes before the diagnosis can be made.
