NSAIDS such as indomethicin (which is not approved for use in children), acetylsalicylic acid , and ibuprofen work by inhibiting cycloxygenase which interrupts the synthesis of PGE2, bone formation. Efficacy has been demonstrated in the hips of adults. Acetylsalicylic acid has been reported to decrease progression in pediatric patients with HO following brain injury but there is not information in children with Cerebral Palsy. If a drug is to be used, ibuprofen or naprosyn are best because of approval for use in children.
