Freeman Miller is a specialist in pediatric orthopedics focused on the care of children with physical disabilities due to brain abnormalities. The primary problems of many children in his practice have cerebral palsy, although there are many children with genetic conditions such as familial spastic paraparesis, Retts syndrome, chromosomal abnormalities, who also are part of his practice. The orthopedic focused care provided aims to help the child and family reach the child's maximum function.
Dr. Miller has done extensive research and lectured on the prevention and treatment of hip, spine, and foot deformities occurring in children with cerebral palsy. He is currently directing a research study in which we are enrolling children with cerebral palsy to study how the feet develop over time. This study will photograph and examine carefully the feet of 100 children with the goal on following them through their whole growth period. Other research projects currently under way include evaluations of bone density and possible treatment options, research to further clarify the properties and response of spasticity in children with cerebral palsy, and research into the impact of general physiologic conditioning and activity levels in children with cerebral palsy.
As part of the focus on education Dr. Miller and the staff of Cerebral Palsy Program at the duPont Hospital for Children have written a book titled Cerebral Palsy: A Guide to Care Giving to help parents and other non-medical caretakers understand the expected problems which develop through the years of growing with this condition. To assist in the education of medical professional, Dr. Miller has also written a book titled Cerebral Palsy published by Springer, New York.
Another important aspect of treating children with cerebral palsy is to improve their ability to walk. Modern treatment requires careful assessment of each child with the Gait Analysis Laboratory. Dr. Miller is the medical director of the laboratory at the duPont Hospital for Children. He is also the Editor in Chief of the professional journal Gait and Posture in which much of the academic research is published.
More information is available concerning the research and lectures of Dr. Miller in his curriculum vita.
